“Scientific and Civic Responsibility in 21st Century: Data Democratization, Data Science, and Data Literacy”
Please mark your calendars to hear Dan Gaylin, president of the National Opinion Research Center, speak to the AUC community about data literacy.
This is a great chance for students, faculty and staff to learn how access to data will shape future politics and career paths. The talk is interdisciplinary and is appropriate for all levels of experience.
The lecture will take place on March 6 from 4-5 pm at Spelman College in Cosby LL-31. It is sponsored by the Career Pathways Initiative and the Office of Research Resources.
This engaging talk will review well-developed case-studies to help us think about:
-the similarities and differences between traditional and “new”/emerging data streams,
-how core principles of good science continue to be critical in data analytics,
-how transparency and objectivity in conducting this science are more important than ever,
-how the democratization of data (the ability of anyone to create, access, analyze and disseminate data) presents enormous opportunity but also serious risks,
-how broad data literacy among our citizenry is the key to mitigating the risks and maximizing the benefits of data democratization,
-ways in which civics, academic, research, and educational institutions can help foster data literacy.
