Students

Program students arrive to the College from different geographies and cultural locations; hence, they embrace the diversity and difference among them. They seek to broaden their perspectives by engaging our international student population here at home, with study abroad travel or our domestic exchange study at selected colleges and universities across the U.S. Students enjoy an Honors residence year in Living Learning Center I (LLCI), focused advising, priority course registration, honors courses and special programming.  Honors courses are typically small and interactive, designed to investigate what we think we know while fostering important and lasting partnerships with peers and faculty through research, study and thesis mentoring.  Students selected for Presidential Scholarships are automatically accepted into the Githii Honors Program.

The Culture
The Githii Honors Program is intended to foster a sense of intellectual community and belonging among students who are in pursuit of diverse interests, yet who seek new friends and partnerships without sacrificing their individuality, their difference, their quirky curiosities, their ideals. Githii Honors Program endorse a culture of questioning within the intimacy of peer support where “sisterhood” endorses a practice of curiosity; builds a culture of honesty.

The Leadership
We endorse a leadership model that is fluid—affirming of individuality and capacity for deep reflection, yet knowing when to work collaboratively to effect “positive social change.”

The Distinction
Students who enter the Githii Honors Program do so in expectation of completing their program of study with Full College Honors at graduation—a special distinction. To do so, scholars must carefully weigh the many involvements available at the College, selecting those that will support their highest aspirations and connect them with an inspired legacy.

The Camaraderie
The Githii Scholar is a connoisseur of collegiate life—she lives it with a difference!

Focusing on the visions of activists from C. L. R. James to Aime Cesaire and Malcolm X, Kelley writes of the hope that Communism offered, the mindscapes of Surrealism, the […]
