The Githii Honors class of 2020 retreated on September 17, 2016. This year’s theme is “Home” and the ways that women in particular must continue to shape and create the spaces in which we will work, live, create and be. The morning session on campus was conducted by Prof. Opal Moore, Dr. Michelle Hite and Dr. Alexandria Lockett. The Spelman faculty provided the young ladies a historical and technological lens to view definitions of home. The afternoon field trip into the Westside Communities was narrated by Sheri Faulkner, Atlanta native, Spelman alumna and the Director of the Westside Community Alliance. Dr. Faulkner is also a teaching faculty at Georgia Tech. Visiting the historic Hammonds House in the West End, the students engaged in meaningful conversations with community leaders around issues of gentrification, culture and activism. At a community park in the English Avenue corridor, the young scholars pledged to educate themselves and work with this neighborhood in which their college is located.
