Development & Outreach Internship

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an intern for its Palo Alto office. Ideally, the intern will be available part-time from late May through late August 2018. This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge of the organization’s priority human rights issues and learn fundraising, event management, and information tracking skills.

Internships are unpaid; however, students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Responsibilities
Interns will learn and be involved in departmental activities which include, but may not be limited to the following:
Cultivating donor relations;
Drafting letters and other correspondence;
Participating in advocacy efforts;
Using the Raiser’s Edge database; and
Organizing and executing outreach events and initiatives.
Qualifications

Applicants must be an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student for the duration of the internship term. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in human rights. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, internet applications) are required. Experience with fundraising, event planning, and/or organizing is desirable.

Applicants who are offered an internship, but who are not US permanent residents, US citizens, or in possession of a valid student visa, must apply for a J-1 visa through a sponsoring organization. This process can take several weeks and applicants must cover their own costs.

No calls or email inquiries, please. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Due to the large number of applications, only short-listed candidates will be contacted further.
