We have designed this space to support your transition into the intellectual community that the Honors Program has formed at Spelman College. In addition to the summer reading, Spelman College Honors Faculty will present you with questions and reflections that currently shape our research and engage us civically.

I am looking forward to our all-day trip to Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, August 25! The website providing details about dress, dining, and departure may be found on the Itinerary Page:. You should consider all five Pages of the website as aiding your preparation for the experience.
For me, travelling to Montgomery is an extension of our summer reading of both Kindred and Just Mercy. While Just Mercy provides an obvious link to the site, Kindred is less obvious yet quite pertinent. The novel speaks to the way that history claims us and demands that we sacrifice, sometimes unwillingly, of ourselves for our progeny; at least this is what it claimed for Dana. Rufus never even considered what he owed the future. What do you make of this racial evaluation of indebtedness? How might an awareness of indebtedness inform how you engage the Peace and Justice Memorial?
I will continue virtually communicating with you through the Montgomery trip website. If you would like to discuss anything pertaining to the trip in person, drop by and see me.
Sincerely, Dr. Hite
